Clinical Care Extender Internship
What is it: Learn what it’s like to work in a hospital and become a part of the patient care team. Participate in basic patient care under the direction of the nursing staff.
Where is it: St. Johns Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, CA (~ 45 min drive)
What you do: Four 3 month rotations in either med-surg, labor and delivery, ER, acute care unit, mother-infant unit, operating room, and possibly other departments as well.
Time commitment: One-year commitment. One 4-hour shift a week for three of the rotations, and two 4-hour shifts a week for one of the rotations. There are also mandatory meetings about twice a rotation. Training is held in Oxnard three consecutive Sundays.

Eastside Neighborhood Clinic
What is it: General clinic in Santa Barbara
What you do: Take patients back and take vitals (weight, height, pulse, respirations, blood pressure), filing, paperwork
Time commitment: You can volunteer as much or as little as you like. Most students volunteer 2-4 hours one day a week.

Westside Neighborhood Clinic
What is it: General Clinic in Santa Barbara
What you do: This clinic does not currently have volunteers so the volunteer’s role will be set up when you start. They also have opportunities for those interested in training and becoming a medical assistant there.
Time Commitment: Up to you.

American Red Cross Santa Barbara Chapter
What it is: The mission of the American Red Cross is to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
What you do: There are many volunteer opportunities ranging from volunteer receptionist to being part of the disaster action team.
Time commitment: Depends on the position, but is very flexible.

Adventures in Caring
What is it: A non-profit organization designed to train volunteers to be compassionate listeners and uplift the spirits or those in hospitals and nursing homes.
What you do: Dress up as Raggedy Ann or Raggedy Andy and visit patients at either Cottage Hospital or one of the nursing homes in the area.
Time commitment: One year, 2 hours per week, one weekend training

Cottage Hospital
What is it: Hospital in downtown Santa Barbara
What you do:: There are many departments open to volunteers in the nursing areas such as oncology, neurology, mother infant unit, orthopedic, and ER just to name a few.
Time commitment: 6 months, 1.5 hour orientation

AmeriSpan SALUD Program
What is it: Program for pre-med and medical school students with hands on medical volunteering in South American countries while learning Spanish and living in home stays.
What you do: There are programs in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, and Mexico. The 4 week program in Guatemala includes morning volunteering and afternoon Spanish classes. The price of the program also includes weekend excursions.
Time commitment: Programs last between 10 days and 4 weeks.

Hospice of Santa Barbara
What is it: This program provides emotional assistance to those who have terminal illnesses or who have lost someone.
What you do: Volunteers can help with administrative work or go through a 6 week training course, two full days, and ongoing educational training in order to work with the patients. There are various tasks that the patient care volunteer can do.

Cancer Center of Santa Barbara
What is it: An organization that treats cancer patients, conducts research, and provides emotional support for cancer patients.
What you do: Various types of volunteer opportunities. Can help with transporting patients around the center and to their cars, welcoming patients, and helping them feel comfortable in the waiting rooms. Volunteers in the office do light secretarial work. Volunteers can also help with different cancer events.
Time commitment: 4 hour shifts, also on a substitute basis.

Child Family Health International
What it is: A program that promotes healthcare worldwide. There are different programs that focus on different interests. If you are interested, go to the website and become a member. Find a trip that fits where and when you want to go, and your interests and language skills. They promote ethnic tolerance and understanding as well as disease prevention.
What you do: Various tasks for all different kinds of people. (You have to be 21)
Time commitment: The trips range from 4-8 weeks.

Global Medical Brigades
What is it: An organization that is comprised of different university clubs. They promote healthcare in developing countries by setting up small clinics and providing services to villages.
What you do: Volunteers perform various medical tasks such as: medical consultations, triage and filling prescriptions under the supervision of licensed medical professionals.
Time commitment: This trip is scheduled for June 17th-June 23rd, 2008.
